365 For Parkinson’s Awareness

For 2016, I have made a personal commitment to run at least one mile each day to support increased awareness of Young Onset Parkinson’s Disease and to raise funds for the Michael J. Fox Foundation.  Using the Charity Miles App, I will raise money with every stride through the support of corporate sponsors.

Why am I focused on increasing awareness of Young Onset Parkinson’s in particular? There is much confusion and misunderstanding surrounding Parkinson’s, including the common misconception that the disease is largely limited to the elderly. In truth, approximately 5% of the people living with Parkinson’s are under the age of 40 and 10% are under the age of 50. Those men and women face unique challenges in their daily lives, both in the work place and at home. Often times they confront those challenges in secrecy, as they battle denial and sometimes depression after diagnosis. I run for my wife and every other person who has struggled to come to grips with a Parkinson’s diagnosis early in life.

Why run every day you ask?  Each day my wife and millions of others like her wake up to confront the challenges of a progressive, chronic neurological disorder that is relentlessly destroying brain cells.  For my wife and every other person living with Parkinson’s disease, there are no days off.  As a show of solidarity, I won’t be taking any days off either.

During the year, I will also be participating in organized runs and other athletic events as a member of Team Fox. Regardless of my condition after those events, I will honor my commitment to log another mile each day. If I can’t run, I will walk. If I can’t walk, I will find another way. That is my commitment to the race for a cure in 2016.
